Extended Learning Opportunity Program (ELOP)

What is ELOP?

ELOP is the Expanded Learning Opportunities Program, a state-funded initiative that provides additional support to specific subgroups of students in transitional kindergarten through sixth grade more opportunities for learning and enrichment beyond the regular school day.  There are four components to the ELOP program: academic support, enrichment opportunities, recreational activities, and community building. GUSD has created an ELOP program that includes extended learning during the school year and two sessions in the summer.

Who is eligible for ELOP?

The Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP) is free of charge for qualifying students.   All families are expected to complete the GUSD annual online forms through the Schoolwise Parent Portal as part of the identification process.   Families are encouraged to complete the Free and Reduced-Price Meal Application, even if they think they may not qualify.  Submitting this form helps the district confirm eligibility for ELOP and other important school funding.  Eligibility lists are updated regularly as applications are received and state data (CALPADS) data is refreshed.

Eligibility is determined by the California Department of Education (CDE) and includes:

  • Students experiencing homelessness
  • Students in current grades TK-6 who qualify for the Free or Reduced-Price Meal Program (income-based)
  • English Learners
  • Foster Youth

Families will receive a letter from the Gravenstein Union School District letting them know if their child is eligible.  Students not included in these priority groups will be placed as space is available and will be parent- paid.

Year-Round Programming

ELOP is more than daycare - it also offers extended-year learning and enrichment.

  • Extended School Day:  When combined with the school day, the ELOP program provides a comprehensive 9-hour program from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm at both Gravenstein and Hillcrest.
  • Summer (intersession): Approximately 30 days during school breaks (1-3 of the 30 days may be used for staff training and professional development)
  • Activities: STEM, arts, games, music, cooking, PE/dance/yoga, drama, and more

We are committed to continuous quality improvement in our programs and refer to the following standards as best practice in serving the students in our district:

  • Safe and Supportive Environment
  • Active and Engaged Learning
  • Skill Building
  • Youth Voice and Leadership
  • Healthy Voices and Behavior
  • Diversity, Equity, and Access

All students participating in ELOP are offered a snack/meal that meets the requirements of the USDA.
